Hello world! As a member that is new of blog group, I am so excited to fairly share many of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. They usually make inquiries like ‘what do you do every day?’ or ‘do you have to work in the summer? once I talk to my friends and family about my work,’ I’m hoping that through my monthly additions to this blog, you are going to get an improved concept of what we do each and every day as admission counselors.
So let’s focus on today’s. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That may appear early with a, reasonable to others, but I can let you know, this morning at 7:45 am, we had been tired (7:45 am in VA seems like 3:45 am in CA…oy.) You see, my journey from Los Angeles was expected to get to Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (become precise.) But https://shmoop.pro/ instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you maybe not,) my journey was delayed three hours. Luckily, my first school check out this morning always has coffee waiting for me, and I was particularly appreciative today (Thanks Sheila!) Although i give of a 30 minute presentation to pupils once I visit, at this school it’s a unique format which consists mostly of me answering questions. Thankfully the students came prepared. They asked great questions and I also think I just stuttered a few times.
I’d time to kill before my visit that is second and found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. I stopped for many morning meal and a coffee refill. In a perfect world i arrive about 10 mins prior to a call, but usually i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Fortunately, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I consumed my bagel and drank my latte. Today I happened to be also able to talk with some counselors that is always a highlight of my day. University counselors are always high in information regarding students, their schools, and usually life generally speaking. It reminds me personally of my high school days where We spent lot of the time on my counselor’s sofa.
Exactly How coffee that is many is it possible to find in this photo?
My third check out today had been to a school i have never checked out prior to. There were about eight students present plus one was even wearing a USC t-shirt. This student, let’s call him Brandon, told me about his recent visit to campus so we’d a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I love sharing common USC experiences with students, specially whenever i am abroad.
Finally, between my third and fourth visit this early morning, I was in a position to grab a 6′ veggie pleasure as I drove to the next school that is high. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.
After my fifth and final go to today, we returned to my resort, debriefed my day in the shape of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch through to some work. My instinct that is first is to check my email. Oh look! I obtained an email from Brandon thanking me personally for my check out and asking a question about something I talked about. Love when that takes place!
I hope to satisfy many of you as We carry on my travels! If there’s anything else you wish to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel absolve to leave questions into the remark section and I will do my far better get back to you soon!
Mythbuster: we need certainly to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice
The Myth: Attending university fairs, visits and tours will increase my likelihood of admission.
The Verdict: Not at USC.
Every August that is late/early, you can find 5 or so emails in my inbox each morning using the subject ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- just wished to tell you that I go to ABC High School, I play baseball and I also can not wait to utilize to USC. I have always wanted to be considered a student in the Marshall School of company.’ Ok great, but what am we supposed to say? Good fortune along with your baseball period? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me how their first semester went, they got the lead role in the spring musical, and that USC remains their first option. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.
At USC, we usually do not monitor students’s interest outside of this actual application for admission choice purposes. Attending our programs is a wonderful method to find out more about USC, but going to an event or sending emails like those we described will not raise your chances of admission to the college.
As admission counselors, it really is true we are your main contact while you feel the admission process at USC so we are happy to assist you with any assist you to may require. However, pupils just benefit from reaching out to us whether they have specific questions- especially concerns to which they can not find the answer online. I do believe pupils often confuse this role and make the assumption us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission that they HAVE to email.
So how will you show us you’re enthusiastic about USC? rather than investing your time emailing us with updates, it is in your absolute best interest to use that time to work on your reaction to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and how you plan to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and possibilities you desire to take advantage of at USC. Rather than emailing us your list of tasks, fill down the Activity Summary thoroughly. A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out a great deal more than an introduction email or an invite to coffee.
Bear in mind that some schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all students to reach away to them, while others may expect students in the area that is local see campus. The thought of demonstrated interest differs, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.
At the conclusion of the day, we do want to see that you are interested in USC and that you’re seriously considering being a student here. The best way to help you articulate this interest is during your application.
